Harry S. Truman CVN 75

Well I am now working on the start of making the catwalks for the CVN now, wow what a job this will be. I used a milling machine was able to make a template out of Alluminum for the design of the catwalks.

I then had to cut many parts out of 1/16" brass square tubing to make the frames. After that is done I then for additional strength added a brass wire inside of the flat cross bar  then bent it upwards for a 90 degree bend then set the upright part over that, once in the jig and the bottom brace is in place I then soldier it all together.

There will be lot more to do and it will take some time to get them all done for this large model.

I will be doing a lot of brass work on this model, so far the stern piece that is used for the ships crew to go onto liberty when she is anchored out is all made from brass.

All of the catwalk sections will also be made from brass as well. This will include the solid deck and grated decks for the catwalks. One of the H-beams that is locatde on the port side of the ship near the stern may also have be made in brass, I am afraid that this may get hit very often either by another model or by persons.

I also know that there will be a large part of the mast both on the Island and the mast aft of the Island that will incorperate a good part of brass work on the platforms and with the SPS-48 and SPS-49 radars. Lets don't forget all of the railings and vertical and inclined ladders. We also have all of the mesh screens that are located in the sponson as well. The safety nets braces and cross members will be made from brass and I will use what is known as Tool for the netting. Tool is a fabric that looks very much like the netting that is used for safety nets, it comes in many colors anad can be bought at most fabric locations.

Well so far I have made 28 of the supports for the catwalks, only 212 more to go and make. I have found that sitting time to make these I can only last long enoungh to make 20 at a time.

Here are some additional photo of the build showing the work located under the sponsons over hangs that are under the flight deck. The photo below is showing the Port side of the ship, and yes that is the AOE that is also being built on the right.

Here are a few shoots of the flight deck.

Test fitting of the flight deck.

Close up of some of the details that are in the deck. The #3 on the deck indicates a landing spot for helos to use. You can also see the details that are in the catapualts as well.

Added some bracing under the bow section to help keep it strong.

Well I got a lot done today, Spent most of the day just going around the deck edge to get a nice clean edge and to also get the sides ready for painting as well. I shoud get the sides painted at the deck edge tomorrow. I also hope to get started on painting the flight deck as well. Lots of masking to be done on the flight deck with all of those paint lines to be done. The only thing that I now have left to do on the flight deck is at the bow and that is to make the round over part. I will try to post some photos tomorrow.

Here is a little update for all to see. I now have the SPS-48 and 49 radars now on the model and also rotating as well. The aft mst is about 80% complete.
